1. Introduction
Vicky Petty (Primary Academy) is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children and young people who participate in our tutoring sessions. We fully recognise our responsibility to keep pupils safe and to protect them from harm, in compliance with the Children Act 2004, Keeping Children Safe in Education (2024), and relevant statutory guidance.
This policy applies to all online tutoring activity conducted using Zoom and other digital platforms.
2. Principles
- The welfare of children is paramount.
- All children, regardless of age, disability, gender, race, religion or belief, sexual orientation, or identity, are entitled to equal protection from harm.
- Working in partnership with children, parents/carers, and schools promotes children’s welfare.
3. Online Tutoring Safeguarding Measures
Platform Use
- All sessions are delivered via Zoom in ‘Focus Mode’, ensuring that students can only see the tutor on screen.
- Student cameras are required for the first session for safeguarding and identification; after this, students may choose whether to keep them on.
- Sessions are not recorded under any circumstances.
Privacy and Security
- Group sessions are conducted so that students can only hear other pupils if they choose to speak.
- Students cannot see each other on screen at any time.
- Chat functions are restricted; students can only message the tutor directly, not each other.
Parental Involvement
- Parents/Carers are required to be present in the room with their child throughout each session to ensure supervision and support.
- Parents are encouraged to raise any safeguarding concerns with Victoria Petty hello@primary.academy
Behaviour and Conduct
- All participants, including the tutor, must abide by respectful standards of behaviour and communication.
- Inappropriate conduct (verbal or written) will result in immediate intervention and may lead to removal from the session.
Safeguarding Concerns
- Any safeguarding or child protection concerns observed by the tutor will be reported to the appropriate authorities and/or school safeguarding lead in accordance with statutory guidance.
4. Safer Recruitment and Training
- Vicky Petty holds an Enhanced DBS check and regularly undertakes recognised safeguarding training in line with best practice.
- References and proof of identity and qualifications are available upon request.
5. Data Protection
- All information about children and families is handled in accordance with GDPR and the Data Protection Act (2018).
- No sessions are recorded or stored.
- Any written records (e.g., safeguarding logs) are securely stored and shared only with appropriate parties.
6. Review
This policy will be reviewed at least annually or sooner if new safeguarding risks are identified or statutory guidance changes.
